Summer 2002 Update

Have a nice summer!

January 2002 Update
Smokey & Miho

Monday, January 28
The Make-Out Room, San Francisco
Sets at 9:00 & 10:30

Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Beck) - acoustic guitar and vocals
Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto, Gorillaz) - vocals
with
Don Falzone (upright bass)
Jon Birdsong (trumpet, horns)
Joey Waronker (drums)
Steve Hodges (percussion)
Ganda (vocals)

Guitarist Smokey Hormel has long been a sideman extraordinaire, with Tom Waits (on Mule Variations and on tour), with Beck (on numerous albums and tours), John Doe, the Blasters, R.L Burnside, K.D. Lang, Johnny Cash, Mick Jagger, and even 'The Cowboy's Sweetheart" Patsy Montana. With The Radio Ranch Straight Shooters, he scored music for the David Lynch films The Cowboy and the Frenchmen (1987) and The Straight Story (1999).

Miho Hatori, singer and lyricist of Cibo Matto, has also sung with artists as diverse as John Zorn (on two albums) and the Beastie Boys (on four separate records) and is featured on the current hit single "19-2000" on the multi-million selling smash by the Gorillaz.

When Beck and Cibo Matto toured together several years ago, the two struck up a friendship based on their mutual interest and love of Brazilian music. With a talented all-acoustic combo, Smokey & Miho perform songs by Baden Powell, Vinicius De Moraes, Edu Lobo, Jorge Ben, Tom Jobim and their own compositions inspired by 60s Brazil - songs of lovers, liars, saudade (sweet sorrow), and Iemanja (the goddess of the sea).

Smokey & Miho are currently recording demos, and their first recorded original song, 'Ocean In Your Eyes' is on the soundtrack to Alphonso Couran's Y Tu Mama Tambien, recently the #1 movie in Mexico, and nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign film.

Attention all designers, artists, theater people:

CIBO MATTO SEEKS STAGE DESIGN!
!

Cibo Matto is looking for designers and artists who can conceive and build a cool stage design for their live shows. This could be a banner to hang from the back of the stage, or some materials to hang around various parts of the stage. It could involve lights, plastics, or fun fur... whatever you can dream of!

All submissions should focus on inventiveness, affordability and portability. The chosen design has to be something the band can carry with them from show to show in a small area of their touring vehicle. So, it should not be very cumbersome, heavy, large, or require too many small pieces that could get lost.

There is a limited budget available, so try to be innovative about materials that wouldn't be too costly. Be inventive!

Please write a detailed concept and send it to (Cibo Matto, Box 146, Village Station, New York, NY 10014-0146, USA ).
We will read all submissions closely and contact you if we think yours is one we want to consider.

Your concept should include:
--a detailed description of your design idea
--how difficult the design would be to make
--how long it would take to make
--portability, weight and dimension (when on stage and when in transport)
--a budget
--how quickly the design can be hung and struck each night.

We are excited to hear your ideas!

Love,
Cibo Matto
