Bad Days was released as a single just after the launch of the majestic new album Clouds taste Metallic. It's a fairly old song - featured on the Batman Forever soundtrack and the limited edition US only EP Providing Needles For Your Balloons. Nevertheless, it's the best choice for a single, as it stands alone very well and it was promoted throught the use of two cds sold at £1.99 each - one came in a `Squidgy pack' with a pvc slipcase full of green liquid. It's the first in a series of novel packagings for the singles from the album. Anyway, there's three b-sides on each of the cds. The squidgy pack is not that exciting to anyone who owns Providing Needles - it has both Ice drummer and Waterbug on it in the same form as they appeared there, although Waterbug is edited onto the fade end of the new track When You Smiled I Lost My Only Idea (easy listening mix). This track, as you may guess form the similarity in title, is a different version of When You Smile. No vocals, a great synth sound, and the vocal melody played and expanded on by either a synth or guitar (you never can tell with Ronald Jones' guitar playing...). It's short but very sweet and positively exudes joy. I presume it must have been some sort of a working version that grew to the track we know and love on the album. Including it is a good idea though and I love it. It's well worth paying for (as if the well cool squidgy pack itself wasn't). Cd number two features She Don't Use Jelly demos - which is essentially a track of cut together early versions of that song (just the picking bit on the one guitar and without the noise adopted later from the song Translucent Egg). It's not that much to listen to but you can really hear the beauty of the song without the bombast getting in the way. You can also have hours of fun trying to work out what get said at the end of the track in the background.... There's another demo on this cd - this time of This Here Giraffe (dubbed Giraffe here). This isn't as rough as the Jelly demos and features more cymbals and a great guitar noise melody. Once again, it's very short and was obviously a starting point for the finished song. It's great too. The final track on here is Girl With Hair Like An Explosion which is a demo built on a loop and without vocals - eventually it became Guy Who Got A Headache... It has some really different sections full of very lush and textured sounds. It glides to a gentle close with a sort of jammed out non distorted bit. Spacious. |
