5 March (98) Just wanted to write and let all of you know how the show went in portland oregon, monday march 6. It was at the crystal ballroom which is a big restored dance hall probaly the nicest place they have played! It was 40 boomboxes (20 on each side) with wayne conducting the right side and steven on the left michael was in the middle running the soundboard.
It went off without a hitch with wayne and steven really giving brillant proformances the set list was 1. test; 2. test; 3. the big ol'bug is the new baby now; 4. a winters day car accident melody; 5. realising the speed of life; 6. heralding in a better ego; 7. altruism (that's the crotch calling the devil black).

any of you feel free to write...

16 February (98) More new album news... the band just came back from the studio with a couple more new tunes ('Buggin'', 'Suddenly Everything Has Changed') and another version of one they did before ('1000ft Hands'). Scott Booker By my calculations, the band have now created a total of 15 tracks (including some 4 mixed down versions of some stuff from Zaireeka).
Suffice to say, it's not far from done now - but they gotta decide what to use and what to leave behind..... those already talked about on this page will (bar the Zaireeka songs) most likely be on there.
15 February (98) Steven is currently off practicing with Kim Deal... writing a few songs, maybe for Kim's next album. Around Not sure what this is for... maybe a new Breeders thing, maybe something else entirely. Maybe not actually anything at all. Possibilites, eventualities......

"The show was listed this week in the paper. It's Saturday 2/28 at Bimbos.
Tix are $12, doors at 5, show at 6pm. I'm kind of surprised its at Bimbo's, that's a swanky red-velvet lounge place. Very nice though."

Roger Anderson Roger says, "Their address is 1025 Columbus @ Chestnut St. It's in North Beach. Phone is (415) 474-0365. It holds around 300 I think, I'm sure it'll sell out w/in the next couple weeks."

Scott Traffas Ronald played guitar on the album, but parted company with Richard shortly before the project was completed.
27 January (98) Yes, the LIPS will be performing the BOOMBOX EXPERIMENTS in Portland, Oregon on TUES. MARCH 2 (venue is still TBA) and Seattle, Wash. on WED. 21 January (98) Non-official news on the Boombox show in San Francisco:

Scott (not Booker) This will (apparently) have 60 boomboxes.
19 January (98) Latest news on the proposed San Francisco Boombox Experiment: "99% sure that is happening on the 28th as well as March 2 in Portland and March 3 in Seattle..." Scott Booker The newest show on earth is indeed hitting the road for what is, presumably, a test tour...
16 January (98) Seeing as y'all keep asking, Zaireeka will AT NO STAGE be issued as a one CD album. PERIOD. Two songs will appear on the next album (due March-ish time) but that's it for now. Me (Drew) Just making it clear so I don't have to answer any more email on it... The reason it'll never happen is that there really is no point - it defeats the object of presenting music in a new format. That format is supposed to be a true listening experience that you become involved in more than you might do usually. Of course no-one really owns four CD players, but get your friends round and really get into it. Something this cool may never happen again....
15 January (98) I've just added a gadget! You can now sign the 'guestbook' for this site. I want it to be more of a posting board if you wanna use one... Me (Drew) Well, it saves me answering all the questions by email!!! And it should be fun....
If you just wanna view it, that's possible too!
14 January (98) The (new conventional) album is nearly complete - they're into the final mixing stage...
This will feature mixed down, and changed, versions of 2025 and OK, I'll Admit It.
Scott Booker From what I know (and heard back last summer) this is gonna sort you out....
It's VERY different, and EVEN MORE cool...

I know that some of the other songs (tentatively titled) include:
'A Spoonful Weighs A Ton' (A song about a bunch of people doing some mad futuristic experiment, possibly to save the world...);
'The Captain' (a sad driving little song about a cold dutiful ship captain and the death of one of his crew);
'Superman' (a song about people's expectations and Superman dealing with this - a metaphor);
'Slow Motion' (A radical song with drum machines and stuff - about feeling like you're in slow motion when time seems to drag itself out);
'The Spider Bite Song' (Documents strange things happening to the band in 1996/7. It also has themes of togetherness and love and stuff...)

Full report to follow!

11 January (98) I didn't see a Lips tour page but thought I'd let you know they're gonna be playing at the Noise-Pop Festival here on Saturday, Feb. 28. It's gonna be the Boombox Experiment. They'll be playing as The Flaming Lips Experiment. I'll let you know how it goes. Bye. Roger from San Francisco Ahh.. so it begins.....
8 January (98) Joe Janecek has finished his Flaming Lips site - this concentrates on recent happenings and progress..... you can find it here. Joe Janecek There's already links to this, but Joe's tied it all up quite nicely now... a much more understated and tasteful world than that which you find here....
2 January (98) Zaireeka seems to finally have got some attention in the UK. NME reviewed it, gave it 10 out of 10 and 3/4 of a page. The word genius was used twice. Huzzah! Keith Cameron wrote the review, and it appears on page 32 of the New Musical Express in the issue dated 3 January 1998. Me (Drew) Here's a coupla quick quotes, must ask Mr Cameron if I can print lots of it....

"The song titles alone betray the presence of visionaries..."
"But it's 'Riding To Work In The Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now)' which most immediately repays the effort required to actually hear. Guitars soar overhead like parabolic tracer bullets (CDs one and three) as a heartbeat emits slowly from CDs two and four, which also provide ghostly, distorted echoes of the main themes. According to Coyne's sleevenotes (copious, useful, highly entertaining) the song concerns a man who imagines he's a secret agent..."
"Mad, you say? The maddest aspect of 'Zaireeka' is surely that a Time Warner company sanctioned its creation in the first place. That and the fact that the Flaming Lips have released arguably their most beautiful music in a vivid new design for listening and ensured that relatively few people shall hear it. to reiterate: a work of genius. (4 x 2.5 = 10)"

16 December (97) Here's a little site documenting The Boom Box Experiment No.3
The snapshot page may change as more photos come in.
George Salisbury (Particle Design) This puts some images to the words..... nice one!
Great site too.. naturally - George, of course, did the design for yer Zaireeka
14 December (97) Drew...I thought they had taken it to the limit...I thought the boys were through...I thought Zaireeka was the tip of their career there was no way in hell that I thought they could pull something even more amazing off...well lets just say they did and this next stuff has soooooo much potential that who knows where they are going to go with it... Tyler Ley That's part of a review of the boombox experiment...
Now I have four reviews of this so it's new menu time!!
13 December (97) Here's a link to an animated version of the boombox flyer

Plus download the handout from the event, as a pdf file

George Salisbury (Particle Design) This is fun, and get the pdf - very interesting reading (commentary from Wayne, and so on) that you'll need Adobe Acrobat to read....
6 December (97) Boom Box Experiment #3 -- Norman, OK 12-13-97

A smaller version of this was conducted at VZD's in OKC about two weeks ago, my friend told me that it was a combination of the Parking Lot experiments and the Zaireeka discs. From what I understand the upcoming experiment will involve 100 people who are to play tapes in seperate boom-boxes. I believe the room will be split into two groups of fifty, conducted by Wayne and Steven.

Mark Schaper
Here's the flyer... mail me if you want a big gif of it. Drew.
