For those wondering why the band didn't appear at the Rockwave Festival in Greece a couple of weeks ago, this was because the show was cancelled for a brief time period and by the time the Lips were told it was back on they had already changed their flights and made alternative plans.

I guess the brief 'cancellation' was to do with the freaky heatwave weather they've been having. Or possibly fall-out from the Roskilde situation? Anyway, the band are genuinely sorry if anyone was disappointed they couldn't make it in the end.

This weeks rumours:
David Holmes did a remix of some Lips track or other
Steven is opening a sports injury clinic
Zaireeka is definitely/probably/possibly coming out on DVD this year
The next US tour will involve livestock onstage, a la ZZ Top in the late 70s

I'm thinking about opening a book on that little lot.

Check the new issue of Select - Wayne is in there talking about his favourite records, and how he keeps the 'Wizard of Oz' Soundtrack in a prominent place so he can rescue it in the case of fire.

You should also check out the recent cover story in Magnet - pretty informative and refreshingly accurate!!

A reminder that you can check out Bradley Beesley's documentary, "The Flaming Lips Have Landed" at Campusvibe. People have been saying great things about this - check out the info at the Norman Transcript and read this letter to Bradley:

Hi-

I'm Steven Garnett from Orlando, and a writer for Ink19.com covering the Florida Film Festival. Wanted you to know that the Flaming Lips Have Landed had folks cheering at Saturday's Midnite Shorts series. Outstanding work.

Having seen them play in '87 and '88, it was cool to see transformation documented. If only they'd bring their latest gig to Central Florida...

Thanks for making the film. Steven Garnett

Check out Ink19.com - it's pretty interesting...

Glastonbury went well - big crowd at the Tent In The Middle Of Nowhere (NME reported the Lips as savng the day at the 'New Bands Tent'). Also, word on the Race remix is that it's kinda disco - crazy and more than a little bit fun!!

No details on release of the remix yet - still maybe coming in August... the new song is good too - very mellow.

This from Dave Fridmann's site: "June 16, 2000 Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev at Tarbox Road Studios recording a remix of Race For The Prize for UK radio. The Flaming Lips worked on a B-side for the Flaming Lips single called Summertime."

Don't know much about this except that a remix has been talked about for a while, maybe coming in August.

Select says this site is #13 Music Site out there. Cool huh?

Well, it'll be a lot better if I ever get around to fixing it and adding the backlog of pictures, links, and the UK1999 tour minisite. Ah well.

Who's been watching BBC1s Euro 2000 football coverage?? Recognise that song in the background when they do the first montage in the program? Yep.... Race For The Prize.

I never thought I'd see that day.

The Flaming Lips will hopefully be playing a Halloween show in OKC this year - the weekend just before Halloween (which is on a Tuesday this year I think). Not only that, but they're aiming to do US dates throughout the preceeding month, starting around about 28 September.

I think the Make-Up are a possibility to open for these shows, if it all gets sorted out. Dates and details will come when there's something concrete to tell....

Some news on earlier rumours - yes there are some plans to try and make a Christmas record, starting this year. Wayne wants to do an entire album with music by the band and 'celebrities' doing the vocals/telling stories - most of the songs would be 'holiday standards'. There have been all sorts of suggested names flying around from the outside world, but a lot of them are way off the mark... it's all still in the sorting out stage right now, so you'll just have to wait and see!

We'll tell you more as and when things get sorted out - but rest assured it's going to be very interesting...

Round-up of the top 5 current Flaming Lips rumours:
5) There's going to be an orchestral show sometime in the next few months. The variation of this rumour being the one about the 5-piece band with more guitar and live drums.
4) There's going to be a Flaming Lips Xmas EP this year.
3) MABD2 is going to happen in September. Bands suggested to be appearing are: Super Furry Animals, Six By Seven, Yoshimi, Wheat, Squarepusher, Home, Add N To X, Broadcast, Mogwai, Bonnie Prince Billy and Mercury Rev.
2) Wayne is going to put his proposed film into production later this year. The one about the first Christmas on a newly colonised Mars.
1) Race For The Prize is going to be remixed by a Beastie Boy and released in the UK this summer.

You know, some of the above could even be true, but then it's always so hard to tell.... nothing from the official sources yet, so I wouldn't hold yer breath too long. Still, if any of them happen to be true, you heard it here first!!

Rocking show at the very sold out Royal Festival Hall last night: balloons everywhere during Jelly and plenty of delerious people all round. Support from Wheat and Built To Spill was good too. Present were songwriting legend Lee Hazelwood and minor indie pop luminaries like Stephen Jones (Babybird), Pete Voss (Campag Velocet), and some bloke out of Embrace.

The aftershow party featured a suitably insane mariachi band. Happy Birthday City Slang!

The band will headline the 'New Bands Tent' at Glastonbury 2000 this year. This will be on the Saturday night, and comes a week before they play at the Roskilde Festival.

They're in the New Bands Tent because they need a covered area in order for the screen to be fully effective...

"We shot the Cubby Bear show in Chicago last month. It was a four camera shoot with a switcher and all that jazz. It looks and sound neato! It will be webcast by campusvibe.com starting April 10th.

Also of note, campusvibe.com will be streaming the 30 minute documentary 'The Flaming Lips Have Landed'. They have ads running in several college newspapers and next week the ad can be seen in Billboard."

This month's Q has a list of "The 100 Greatest Acts of Rock'n'Roll Folly: A Celebration" - The Lips make it in at No 30 with releasing Zaireeka.......

This feature is a mix of complimentary and derisory - the Lips get a nice bit, Michael Jackson (at No 6 - apes Christ at the Brit Awards; at No 1 - sails giant statue of himself down the Thames) gets some serious hatchet...

For those in the US (well, certain bits of them), you could really help out the Flaming Lips by getting onto your local radio station and requesting they play the Lips!! Try:

KGSR; Austin, TX - Phone: 512-390-5477 email: jdenberg@kgsr.com
CD101; Columbus, OH - Phone: 614-221-1011 email: dj@cd101.com
WFNX; Boston, MA - Phone: 781-595-1017 email: fnxradio@fnxradio.com
WFNX; Portland, ME - Phone: 877-fnxradio email: fnxradio@fnxradio.com
Q101; Chicago, IL - Phone: 312-591-8300 email: music@q101.com

Important: don't go emailing all of these with one email or anything like that - spam requests of that kind are never welcome!
Same goes for keeping on emailing over and over all at once, especially with anything automated - this could hurt the band...

For those asking about Headphones on the current tour, there will be 150 pairs of headphones for use at each of the shows.... so get there early!!

If you decide to bring your own, you'll need an FM receiver and some 'open' headphones that don't cover/totally block your ears - you want to hear the PA mix as well as the broadcast one, for maximum effect....

An appeal regarding the upcoming tour: "Bring hand puppets and/or wear costumes to the shows! Make it an event! ...and let everybody know ...ray guns, moon jumps, balloons, flowers, whatever... go nuts."

This began in London, then OKC and George says there was lots more going on in Japan. It makes it a really cool atmosphere - so get in the party spirit!!

Joe went up to Chigago with the Lips last week for the Cubby Bear show and the WGN television show, "They did the WGN morning show at 7 AM. They played Superman as well as all of the outro spots to commercials. Everyone was amazed with the band's performance. People were especially interested in Wayne's use of the Theremin. The performance was pretty scaled down with no backing tape or video projection. Lips collectors will definitely want to get a copy of this."
