This album came hot on the heels of the debut Hear It Is, as the band were ready to go into the studio straight after touring that record. It has that same crazy reverb sound to it but yet again is a wonderful package. The cover features a weird Dali pastiche painted by the band, and the album features some defining moments. The ten minute classic One Million Billionth Of A Billisecond On A Sunday Morning is absolutely Lips - a pretty dynamic piece with lyrics which obscurely tell a story about pondering existence and generally thinking hard. Then there's the backwards warbling that is the first part of Ode To C.C. - the second part of which is a classic piece of laidback neargrooving about being hassled by a Jesus freak while waiting for a bus. The beautiful love songs Can't Exist and Thanks To You - sung by Richard English (I believe) - with some understated feedback moments. The song Prescription:Love is more Lips wit and wordplay worked into a fairly upbeat kind of punk song with a three minute intro. After this, we also have the odd near-pop of Can't Stop The Spring - which they made a video for somewhere along the line and, of course, the enduring album closer. Love Yer Brain is a cautionary tale about taking drugs being better than killing yourself, and generally not being so bad in the face of the world's madness. It ends with the sound of a piano being smashed (either real or simulated - I'm not sure if they could have afforded it) for quite a while with a section of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows looped in the very distant background near the very end. This is perhaps the only time I can think of the Lips being properly angry on a record and it's quite interesting (if a little disturbing) to listen to. |
