More on some finished tunage: 'totally organic and amazing' is a description of the sound
of just TWO of the cds at once.... The song writing is 'at a completely different level'... lots
and lots of keyboards apparently... |
the captain |
Well, can you wait another four months? Me neither.... Couple of things further: I hear that
Wayne possibly wants to take the experiment on a college lecture tour. Also, Mike has cut off all
his hair! |

For those who might be wondering - Ronald Jones is alive and well and still in OKC.
Apparently hanging out and playing music with friends for fun - spotted in a record shop
in Norman back in April. |
Barbara Jarvis |
Nice to know Ron is okay... |
| 21 May (97) |
Apparently, the album may be released in stages?? |
Matt |
Not sure about this, I heard that Wayne wanted the price of the set to be as near as
possible to the standard price for one cd - releasing in stages may complicate that...? |
| 19 May (97) |
The band was asked to do something at Lollapalooza, but isn't - because Wayne was gonna do
the experiment but they wouldn't give him a tent... they wanted him to use the cars out in the
main parking area. |
Scott Booker |
Well, some people just don't get it I suppose... Scott won't be drawn on the content of the
album though.... he's keeping his cards close to his chest. |
| 15 May (97) |
Reports from Tarbox Road describing the album as 'John Bonham meets Walt Disney'...
There are keyboards all over the place and a lot less guitar, apparently. |
the captain |
Okay... no guitars?? sounds kinda odd?? Does this mean Steven is playing a lot of the stuff??
Still, it's good to know they're not retreading old ground.. this should be a real adventure! |
| 6 May (97) |
The Lips have gone back to their other lives (temporarily) as Dave Fridmann is currently
doing some other work (as of 5th May) and the boys have gone home for a break. |
Scott Essary |
Scott Booker says the recording is going well... I think they're just cutting loose a while,
then it's back to the studio at the end of May |
| 10 April (97) |
The new Flaming Lips project - being recorded right now - is indeed set to
be in the form of a four cd set to be played simultaneously. Expect it in
September... and keep your fingers crossed as the early indications are that
this will be unreal. Two songs so far are tentatively titled "35,000 Feet Of
Despair" and "Riding To Work In 2025". |
Scott Booker |
These guys are nuts!!! Do we love them or what??? This is going to be weird
and most certainly cool..... now I see how the parking lot experiment ties in
with the new record.... |
| 8 April (97) |
The band is set to release a 4 CD set, designed to be played all at the
same time (as in parking lot experiment) in the comfort of your own home..... |
Nev Kaye |
Eh???? won't that need four cd players.... |
| 30 March (97) |
The Flaming Lips EP will be reissued in Feb/March 1998 |
Scott Booker |
There y'go.. you can all stop asking after it now... |
| 25 March (97) |
The new Flaming Lips project starts today at Tarbox Road Studios, near New
York. |
Dave Fridmann's morning news |
The inaugral sessions for Dave's new studios... Also quite possibly
the Pet sounds for the 1990s, judging by what's been said about it and the
preproduction reports... |
| 24 March (97) |
Look out for the b-side of the new Chemical Brothers single. `Prescription
Beats' has a little sample that sounds just like the end of She Don't Use
Jelly... |
Nev Kaye |
mmmm... did they credit it?? |
| 20 March (97) |
An excerpt from the Chicago Tribune (19th March) on the SXSW conference in
Austin, Texas reads. |
Tom Fitzsimons |
Cool huh??more to follow.... |
| 10 March (97) |
The new album will now get underway in late March, near New York, and should
be out before 1998 hits us. Talk of incorporating the parking lot
experiment. |
anon |
A report of a conversation with Wayne (thanks Keith) suggests that the
experiment will not be used on the album, so I'm gonna idly speculate that we
might get a double package with the experiments issued as a bonus cd/lp with the
new album... |
| 7 March (97) |
For those who have not yet heard the song from Suburbia soundtrack, Hot Day
is pretty short (1min39) and `sounds like a raw version of the rocking part of
Bad Days'... maybe an outtake.... heavy drums, lots of distorted circusy guitar,
and an upbeat melody...' Very cool whatever... |
Stuart Berman |
There y'go... not especially new, but cool all the same... |
| 28 February (97) |
Next Parking Lot Experiment is in Austin at SXSW on March 15th. A previously
unheard song is on the Suburbia soundtrack - it's called `Hot Day'. Album due
for release in September time. Ronald will definitely not be replaced. Also, the
band are debating the reissue of the Warner Bros lps on vinyl - including a
version of Providing Needles with some weird bonus tracks. |
Scott Booker (on AOL) |
Anyone heard Hot Day yet? What's it like?? Only six months to time zero -
Scott describes it as a `strange, new, exciting thing. No one has ever done
anything like this before - trust me.....' Well.... |
| 15 February (97) |
Just a quick mention of some old gossip about a Lips CD Rom said to feature
recording sessions from Clouds, All of the videos, and one of Wayne's UFO
stories. If it ever happened or not is unclear. |
David Hoffner |
David heard/saw this about a year ago, but doesn't know if anything ever got
finished.... |
| 8 February (97) |
New Lips Record to be made in March. They plan to record the impossible, as Warner Bros. just gave them the green light
to `make a record so different and exciting it will either make us millionaires or break us'. |
Scott Booker |
Oh my...... and I thought Hit To Death was crazy (and cool). The record they've always wanted to make? This is
going to bend minds, maybe even shake up the world of music? |
| 29 January (97) |
Wayne and Steven are working on new stuff, and want to get back into the studio for some fruther demoing in
February. No word on Ronald rumours.... Nathan Roberts is thinking about opening up a record store in OKC.... |
Wade Starr |
looks like we're winding up to a new record proper |
| 21 January (97) |
Spin magazine ran a small item on the band recently. Covers Wayne's Parking Lot Experiment, Steven's spider bite
and so on. No news on tour dates or new releases, rumour that Ron may yet rejoin the band. |
Wade Starr |
not much incredibly new, except of course the suggestion that Ron may rejoin. Who knows? |
