Drew dude, Just finished reading your page and found it fascinating. I've already e-mailed Clark McCabe and thought you might enjoy my encounters with the Lips. I've been a huge fan since the Lips showed up in Chicago at the Cubby Bear during the Oh My Gawd tour and fogged and strobed the place out. Since moving to L.A., I was very fortunate to catch the Lips at the Whiskey last summer 1995. My friend and I were strolling about early to buy tickets, when who should we see tying balloons to parking meters, but Wayne. Since he was trying to preserve his voice for the show he only communicated with us non-verbally. My freind asked if he could videotape the show and Wayne agreed. So we have this great show on tape of the Lips at the Whiskey playing a lot of Priest Driven Ambulance. This past summer I caught two of the three shows they played at Hollywood Moguls. The first night Dr. Timothy Leary was upfront and ready for the show to begin. (He did not look well.) Once the Lips came out on stage and lit up the place with their atomic sounds, old Tim had to be wheeled out with his entourage. I guess he couldn't take the decibel level. I do believe the Flaming Lips were the last concert the good doctor saw because he died two days later. What a way to go, huh? Bob |
