Upon its original release ten years ago, Paul Simon's seminal album
Graceland became one of those rare works of art that have arguably
changed the world. Simon's brilliant collaboration with some of South
Africa's most revered musicians became a global phenomenon and helped
focus the world's attention on the inequities of apartheid. This special
Enhanced CD version of Graceland celebrates the album's tenth
anniversary and provides a multimedia journey into its origins and
legacy. (The music's pretty great, too. But you probably knew that
already.)
Among the highlights of the CD's enhanced contents: video footage
from the original Graceland recording sessions; new interviews with Paul
Simon, guitarist Ray Phiri and Ladysmith Black Mambazo's Joseph
Shabalala; a gallery of stills and footage from the Graceland tour,
including the climactic performance in Zimbabwe; highlights from Paul's
Graceland-era appearance on Saturday Night Live and the "You Can Call Me
Al" video; and Paul's handwritten lyrics to the songs along with his
track-by-track comments.
Since its release, Graceland has sold more than 5 million copies in
the United States. It also won several Grammys including one for Album
Of The Year. This anniversary edition of the album will introduce the
music to a new generation of listeners while deepening the experience
for those who are already committed fans. Expect heavy media visibility.
The CD booklet also includes a lengthy new essay--"Lasers In The
Jungle: The Conception And Maturity Of A Musical Masterpiece"--by
Billboard editor in chief Timothy White, which tells the Graceland story
in detail.
