This is the debut album from Son Volt, which features former Uncle Tupelo members Jay Farrar and Mike Heidorn, along with Dave Boquist and former Joe Henry backing band member Jim Boquist. "Trace" is a statement in growth for Farrar. His songwriting talent is combined with each individual's musical abilities to produce a cohesive record which draws from rock, country, and bluegrass influences.

Trace finds Farrar extending Uncle T.'s fragile, folky legacy with a set of brilliant Americana that helps redefine roots-rock for the 90's.

Farrar has formed a perfect band to display his rough-hewn, deeply expressive songs. Ranging from acoustic lullabies like "Wind Fall" to such edgy electric anthems as "Drown," Son Volt provide the backdrop for the best work Farrar has ever done.
