(meakim) looks like our man is here
(bonimoe) I'm not even my own man..
(meakim) well, it's ok, i'm man enough for all of us.
(Awapy) holy moly. quite the turn out mateo
(HotelOpera) you belong to noone?
(bonimoe) correct
(HotelOpera) like an orphan?
(meakim) i thought anyone belonged to noone?
(meakim) (subtle e.e. cummings reference is left misunderstood)
(bonimoe) there's only one everything
(HotelOpera) you can't have everything, where would you put it?
(bonimoe) it's already in place, there's only one of it.
(SCUG) hi!
(SCUG) thanks so much for all of you showing up! Mad props to Mark, Feets, and Sir Tully
(SCUG) For your info: the Bonimoe is the Mark man
(SCUG) To ask questions double click SCUG
(SCUG) Only one question at a time
(SCUG) on a first come first serve basis.
(SCUG) We use first questions only, so make it count.
(SCUG) We will prompt you when it's your turn to ask a question.
(SCUG) And you will be able to type for that moment.
(SCUG) We're sorry but time does not allow for you to chat personally.
(SCUG) Enjoy the chat!
(meakim) hurrah!
(bonimoe) mista?......
(meakim) indeed!
(meakim) how are you this fine day?
(meakim) Can you briefly explain the keyboard sampler setup you use for Soul Coughing,
including what brand of sampler you use and the method by which samples are
plucked out and played?
(bonimoe) AkaiS1000 sampler
(bonimoe) had if berfore SC
(bonimoe) bouthgt it with student loan
(bonimoe) writing muic form a film and needed
(bonimoe) to screw with the voice
(bonimoe) Played varied so much
(bonimoe) I'm not sure how many ways we could talk about how its played
(bonimoe) I treat it as
(bonimoe) a piano with different sounds
(lemonlime) wow, i'm so nervous! :) ..
(bonimoe) if someone is bummed by my response speak up..
(lemonlime) i was wondering if you like visiting canada..or have you ever
(bonimoe) we've been to Toronto.
(bonimoe) Montreal, Vancouver
(bonimoe) always have a great time
(lemonlime) that's good
(J-Dude) About the Ricky Martin thang. You recently mentioned on the SC
Message Board Of Love that "the court case is over".
(J-Dude) Has anything actually been litigated yet?
(bonimoe) no litigation...
(bonimoe) it's difficult because
(bonimoe) doughty has admitted
(bonimoe) in writing that it's from a candy
(bonimoe) bar.. which is cool with me but
(bonimoe) not in a court case trying to get money for the r
(bonimoe) reference.....but it's still onthe table
(bonimoe) and I liked his name
(Tunes) Hey Mark... Have you ever heard of Tortoise from Chicago? If so, what
do you think of his compositions and sampling?
(bonimoe) I didn't know it was just one person
(bonimoe) saw them live in europe and
(bonimoe) was really into it.
(bonimoe) thought the ensemble attitude was
(bonimoe) what it was about.
(bonimoe) but - that said, am more impressed to know it's one person.
(cc) howdy mark! Talk a little about the sound of this new scofield record if you would.
(and of course, will this group be coming to Cain's??) :)
(bonimoe) i initially he wanted
(bonimoe) me, sebastian and yuval
(bonimoe) to play with him on a couple of tracks
(bonimoe) but the y were bust
(bonimoe) busy
(bonimoe) so he invited me to color some of
(bonimoe) the pieces if you will
(bonimoe) i don't give a paino/organ thing at all
(bonimoe) in style it's similar to the
(bonimoe) previous one with MMW.
(bonimoe) were is Cains'
(bonimoe) unfortunately not..sucks that even SC hasn't played there.
(TubeSocks) Hey, I was wondering about the basic construction of a SC song i.e.
how it is written, the order of the different layers. Just generally.
Also, I know its kinda lame, but any advice for musicians?
(bonimoe) not to be corny but....
(bonimoe) I was always impressed with Howard Roarke
(bonimoe) from 'the Fountainhead'.. even when he couldn't
(bonimoe) get a job designing buildings
(meakim) whoa hey... nice.
(meakim) OK, Mr. Mark... Two questions about "The Incumbent": Which part of the
lyrics to the song were penned by you... and what led to the decision to
combine the original "Incumbent" and "New York, I Won't Go Back" into one song?
(bonimoe) wait - did I answer the other question?
(meakim) no i think he didn't finish with TubeSocks's question
(bonimoe) ask again tube?
(TubeSocks) okay :)
(TubeSocks) I wanted to know about the basic construction of a SC song, how it
is written, the order of the dif. layers. Just Generally. Also, any
advice for musicians?
(bonimoe) advice - work hard, really.
(bonimoe) soul coughing song. -
(bonimoe) screenwriter's -
(TubeSocks) that is my fave
(bonimoe) doughty hears this keyboard part I am using in another song
(bonimoe) he says he's got a great poem
(bonimoe) he does and then sebastian and Yuval
(bonimoe) compeltely finish it.
(bonimoe) soundtrak -
(bonimoe) doughty comes with
(bonimoe) this rockin guitar vocal jammy...
(bonimoe) we do our version attack and ...
(bonimoe) white girl -
(bonimoe) doughty hears rocking
(bonimoe) sebastian bass thing and start riffing
(bonimoe) yuval and I go.....
(bonimoe) in other words different often.
(meakim) ok... should i go now?
(bonimoe) it's like a news headline... god sucks guy
(meakim) hahaha
(meakim) well, then, it's the best christmas ever.
(meakim) thank god for cut-and-paste...
(meakim) Two questions about "The Incumbent": Which part of the lyrics to the song
were penned by you... and what led to the decision to combine the original
"Incumbent" and "New York, I Won't Go Back" into one song?
(bonimoe) there's only one everything....
(bonimoe) they were all like magnets that just had to
(bonimoe) be stuck together.
(ramenBoy) Hi Mark - what's the most bizarre or absurd sample you've ever used
in a song? Also (this means a lot to me) what is your favorit flavor
of ramen noodles?
(bonimoe) not for Soul Coughing, but several
(bonimoe) years ago
(bonimoe) I worked with Christian Marclay
(bonimoe) doing an installation and we made
(bonimoe) a cd of about 90 farts..
(bonimoe) many of mine were real..
(ramenBoy) Haha
(bonimoe) remind of the options for flavors
(bonimoe) because i used to do that stuff
(ramenBoy) Beef, Chicken, Pork, Shrimp, Oriental, Chili, Creamy Chicken...
(bonimoe) shrimp is was for sure
(ramenBoy) Rock on. Thanks, Mark!
(SCUG) ok, we're working on the next question
(morricone) hi mark, i was wondering what prompted you to get into avant-garde music?
(and perhaps your favorite work by Zorn)
(bonimoe) I don't really fit the catagory of avant-garde
(bonimoe) musician.
(morricone) well, 90 farts sounds pretty avant-garde..
(bonimoe) I'm a big sucker for tortue garden.
(bonimoe) that was a site specific installation and that was an appropriate soundtrack
(bonimoe) I mean the book on sampling
(morricone) well, working with marclay, and all, what led to that?
(bonimoe) I did have many friends at the Knitting
(bonimoe) Factory and I worked at
(bonimoe) a studio after school
(bonimoe) many friends would come because I made it
(bonimoe) cheap for them. including Christian who I also did
(bonimoe) a dance score with.
(bonimoe) I like music that takes chances which isn't necessarily
(bonimoe) avant-garde.??
(Demetri) What's up? I was just wondering if you what exactly you did with
John Scofield on the new cd and if you will be playing with him or just
playing solo stuff at the shows, more specifcally in Cleveland.
(Demetri) oops
(Demetri) i just realized you answered the first part before
(Demetri) with the MMW referrence
(bonimoe) I'm not playing with him in Cleveland
(bonimoe) just three on the east coast
(Demetri) damn
(bonimoe) and a few on the west coast.
(Tunes) Mark... Tunes again... I just asked you what you thought about Tortoise
and I didn't get the chance to clarify -- Tortoise is a band -- John McEntire
does the sampling... that's what I meant to ask you about. Are you influenced
by the free/improv direction of their music? Do you ever get the itch to just
bust out at a show and do improv?
(bonimoe) surely - and I think we do at times.
(bonimoe) though that's not the overall goal of
(bonimoe) SC. I played tons at the Knitting Factory
(bonimoe) with many people in some free, free stuff
(Tunes) i noticed at one show you guys started improving... doughty sat down and
chilled -- gave the crowed a "be patient" look
(bonimoe) be patient the words are coming..
(bonimoe) I meant that's what doughty was trying to
(bonimoe) tell the crowd. just a joke
(Tunes) totally... i think the crowd should dig it and give it more of a chance...
(mightyb) Hey Mark...have a question about your equipment...what do you use to
cut most of your samples???
(mightyb) do you use the PC a lot in the studio?
(bonimoe) Never used a pc or mac for sampling
(bonimoe) always the akai from cd, dat, cassette ,whatever
(SCUG) mark are you cool for 10 more minutes?
(bonimoe) I use a Pro Tools for recording but that's different.
(mightyb) besides the farts, how do you come up with them??? spur of the moment
messing around, or know what you want?
(bonimoe) whatever - keep going.
(bonimoe) i spend a lot of time
(bonimoe) playing and making sounds like that
(mightyb) cool....thanks!
(SCUG) just give us the word when the fingers get tired
(Bifteck) hey, mark. :)
(bonimoe) allo
(Bifteck) would you call yourself a geek? someone who is highly technologically involved?
(Bifteck) if so, why.. and if not, who in the band is more so?
(bonimoe) no - I do play keyboards which
(bonimoe) is a thing that is surrounded
(bonimoe) by technology and people swamped in it.
(Bifteck) right, that's true.
(bonimoe) I have very specfic
(bonimoe) compositional goals and sometimes
(bonimoe) the technology is what makes that happen
(bonimoe) I tend to know on
(bonimoe) one piece
(bonimoe) of equipment really well but can't tell
(bonimoe) you anything about similar models out there.
(Bifteck) i see.
(Bifteck) thanks. :)
(bonimoe) more?
(kidhemp) Hello Mar
(bonimoe) allo
(kidhemp) I am wondering if, since we will not get to see you on the Scolfield tour,
will there be
(kidhemp) a supporting tour for the second Horse trick cd
(bonimoe) I will definitely do a couple of shows for that.
(bonimoe) Probably one on the east coast, west and middle
(bonimoe) it will take some kind of ensemble.
(kidhemp) Any plans for Live Releases or it or SC?
(kidhemp) Of it *blush*
(bonimoe) plenty of live SC out there. Really great
(bonimoe) recording from the Supper Club
(bonimoe) show that we did in August.
(bonimoe) Probably releasing something like that by the end of the year.
(J-Dogg) Are you guys working on anything as a group, currently -- new album / soundtrack
/ commercials? And of course, the next Soul Coughing tour to hit the Detroit
area shall be. . . when?
(bonimoe) As a group not really - I mean doughty and I are busy promoting SC in our own way.
(bonimoe) There is an IMAX Michael
(bonimoe) Jordan film which wants a hip-hop mix of Bon Bon.
(bonimoe) Detroit not soon enough.
(J-Dogg) thanks, man.
(bonimoe) surely.
(batere) Hey there. I'm wondering if any one song or songs proved to be the most nightmarish
to get down on record? And who's fault was it? :)
(bonimoe) good question - !
(bonimoe) Maybe I'll Come Down was
(bonimoe) extremely difficult and in the end
(bonimoe) I'm not sure any of us knows.
(bonimoe) It's hard to blame
(bonimoe) on one person - it has to be
(bonimoe) a collective effort for sure.
(SCUG) from Sisyphus --- Would you say its mostly about the poerty first and then
the music? the lyrics are unbelieveable (for lack of a better adjecttive.
(bonimoe) no I wouldn't but I do agree the words are great.
(SCUG) from Mylar- What have been some of your favorite clubs to play in?
(bonimoe) First Ave., 7th st.,
(bonimoe) Euclid, Supper Club,
(bonimoe) Filmore, 9:30 Club.....
(SCUG) DC!
(Tully) Hey Bonimoe...I have a question :)
(bonimoe) and?
(Tully) What are your feeling of the Knitting Factory
(Tully) ?
(bonimoe) For me it was a great
(bonimoe) support network of people who were
(bonimoe) all very talented and trying to push
(bonimoe) personal limits. It was difinitely where I learned to
(bonimoe) be professional.
(Tully) the concert that I saw there was awesome...one of the songs you guys played
was very NYC focused, although the actual song slips my mind
(bonimoe) 212?
(Tully) might have been...either that or...
(Tully) The Brooklynites
(Tully) Thanks :*)
(bonimoe) True Dreams has a reference too.
(Feetnik) hi there mark...we did an interview a while back via email, do you have any
future plans to work with William Wegman again?
(bonimoe) Yes, he recently asked if I had some time at
(Feetnik) awesome!
(bonimoe) the end of this summer for something related
(bonimoe) to the Hardly Boys. Yes, i love him.
(Feetnik) me toooo
(Feetnik) weimeraner love
(bonimoe) No - a him lover.
(bonimoe) ha ha.
(JRotten) mark.. this is Mr gilmour hehehe we've emailed before.. about a project...
I was wondering why you support the Liquid audio format over other formats
and what your views on internet bootlegs were?
(bonimoe) sorry - was away for a moment but.
(bonimoe) I just want a way to release new things
(bonimoe) more often than once every two years.
(bonimoe) And because I'm under contract it has
(bonimoe) to be through an outlet that the record
(bonimoe) company trusts or at least leaves alone.
(JRotten) So beyond your affiliation with WBRs.. you are flexible as to format..
you want easiest and best?
(bonimoe) MP3 represents hijack and sale to record companies.
(bonimoe) Liquid does offer encryption.
(bonimoe) I know their system is cumbersome but I don't think
(bonimoe) it will be for long and it's still free.
(bonimoe) Audio quality much better,
(bonimoe) and you can still make an mp3 if you must.
(meesterimp) was it hard starting out, surviving and all....? why do you think you made it?
(bonimoe) A composition teacher
(bonimoe) told me that if I was really
(bonimoe) serious about music I had to move
(bonimoe) to NY. I believed him, moved and
(bonimoe) if you want to there is always a job
(bonimoe) doing music in that city.
(bonimoe) Most definitely hard surviving and eating bowls of
(bonimoe) rice for years but hey.....
(verablue) How did the song in the soundtrack for Gran Turismo 2 come about?
(bonimoe) ?????
(bonimoe) Title of song?
(verablue) Super BonBon is one of the songs in rotation for play during races
(bonimoe) aha -
(bonimoe) I had some music groove thing
(bonimoe) i really liked and started playing it for Seb and Yuval.
(bonimoe) With them it was instant and then it took doughty a couple of days for the
(bonimoe) words - I have the tapes, it was funny.
(bonimoe) Called 'I'm going to get cigarettes' for a while.
(bonimoe) The words I can't say.
(verablue) Great, but how did it end up on the playstation game?
(bonimoe) a candy bar first.
(bonimoe) They called and asked -
(bonimoe) seemed like a good thing to say yes to.
(meakim) Hey Mark, i was just curious if those just-mentioned Super Bon Bon tapes had
any chance of surfacing?
(meakim) Like maybe as Liquid Audio or some circulating tapes?
(bonimoe) One of them most definitely and..
(bonimoe) there's a good case for liquid because the
(bonimoe) record company assumes it's protected where they
(bonimoe) were starting to get vocal about mp3.
(meakim) very cool.
(J-Dude) Why has SC never released "Don't Go Wreck The Car"? I've always thought that
it has excellent radio potential. Also, which of the 3 SC releases is your
personal favorite and why? Thanks.
(bonimoe) Agree that's a great song - just didn't work out as
(bonimoe) a recording - maybe another time.
(bonimoe) The first two albums I'm really into - not enough distance to El Oso just yet.
(TubeSocks) How did you get started with the band? And what is the funniest or most
interesting thing that has happened on tour and with soul coughing in general?
(bonimoe) Was in a rehearsal room with three guys I didn't know and who
(bonimoe) didn't know eachother. happened one day and then.....
(bonimoe) We've had some pretty weird stuff happen.
(TubeSocks) also, i wanted to say just thanks for making such great music
(bonimoe) I'm having some weird stuff happen.
(bonimoe) just kidding.
(SCUG) we have four more questions left for mark...
(bonimoe) For some reason
(bonimoe) I couldn't see what was just
(bonimoe) being typed sorry.
(bonimoe) you're welcome.
(SCUG) we have four more questions left for mark...
(batere) You kind of hinted at the answer to this earlier, but do the four of you usually
keep tapes rolling as you jam so you can review them later for song ideas
or do you generally trust your memories?
(bonimoe) I do.
(bonimoe) We have some very fluid
(bonimoe) rehearsals and its
(bonimoe) nice to catch some of that.
(SereneBabe) will you do anything with Low when you are in the Twin Cities on this
upcoming tour of yours?
(SereneBabe) anything for the public to see/hear?
(bonimoe) No - but I am becoming involved in their new album.
(bonimoe) Just finished a remix for 'I Remember'.
(bonimoe) This summer maybe.
(SereneBabe) any idea when that'll come out? ahhh.
(SereneBabe) 'kay
(bonimoe) Year?
(ju-jube) what was the most interesting thing that anyone has ever asked you to autograph
(bonimoe) I remember being so surprised when someone
(bonimoe) wanted me to sign money.. not that weird.
(SCUG) ok....last question
(Tully) LAST QUESTION :*)
(bonimoe) Should i be saying thank you for coming -
(bonimoe) I'll do it again?
(Tully) JRotten should have the last question...
(JRotten) =-)
(bonimoe) allo
(bonimoe) but j was so good.,.,
(JRotten) I would like to thank you for coming tonight and being involved in making
such wonderful music. my question is: did you enjoy tonight and are you thinking
of doing it again?
(bonimoe) Most impressed and I would very much like
(bonimoe) to do it again if that's not too presumptious.
(JRotten) i wish i could have been here for the whole thing. thank you again!
(SCUG) SCUG would like to thank Mark for being so cool for doing this for you all,
props to Tully, Feets and all you guys...be sure to go to SCUG later on to view
the transcipt of this chat session.
(bonimoe) Mad ridiculous props to SCUG!!
(bonimoe) With a pen?
(Tully)Thanks Mark!! :)
(J-Dude) cools
(SCUG) thanks you all
(Bifteck) that was pretty rocking.
(kidhemp) Neat stuff!
(meesterimp) that was quite grand
(meakim) that was quite the intriguing goodbye.
(J-Dogg) right on
(TubeSocks) that was neat, he was really cool
